How to Activate 5G in Pakistan? (Step-by-Step Guide)
7 July 2026 • 9 min
You bought a 5G-capable phone. You may have even seen the 5G launch in the news. But when you check your phone, the icon isn't showing up, or you're not sure where to even turn it on.
This guide covers what you need before 5G will work, how to activate 5G in Pakistan on iPhone and Android, why it might not be showing up, and how to confirm you're actually connected.
What You Need Before You Can Use 5G in Pakistan?
Before troubleshooting your settings, four things need to be in place…
Is 5G Available in Your Area?
5G in Pakistan is still rolling out and limited to select areas in major cities. Outside these zones, your phone won't show a 5G connection regardless of settings. Check your operator's coverage map first.
Does Your Phone Support 5G?
Not every phone supports 5G, and not every 5G phone supports Pakistan's specific frequency bands. Search your phone model with "5G bands" to confirm.
Is Your SIM or eSIM Ready For 5G?
Older physical SIMs may not support 5G even on a compatible phone. If yours is several years old, you may need a replacement.
Do You Need a Special 5G Package?
Some operators require your plan to specifically include 5G access. Check with your provider that your data package supports it.
How to Activate 5G on iPhone?
- Open the Settings app and tap Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Choose one of the following based on what you want:
- 5G Auto uses 5G only when it meaningfully improves your experience, automatically switching to LTE otherwise to save battery. This is Apple's recommended default.
- 5G On always uses 5G when available, even if it offers no real speed benefit. This can reduce battery life.
- 5G Standalone (if shown) uses 5G for everything, including calls, on networks that support it. Only appears if your operator offers a standalone 5G network.
- If you don't see any 5G options here, your SIM, plan, or area likely doesn't support 5G yet.
- Restart your phone after changing the setting to make sure it takes effect.
How to Activate 5G on Android?
Android phones vary by brand, but the setting is always found within your mobile network options. Here's where to look depending on your device.
How to Activate 5G on Samsung?
Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Mode, and select the option that includes 5G.
How to Activate 5G on Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO?
Go to Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → [your SIM] → Preferred network type, and choose the 5G option.
How to Activate 5G on Infinix / Tecno?
Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIM cards → Preferred network type, and select 5G.
How to Activate 5G on Oppo / Vivo / Realme?
Go to Settings → SIM Card & Cellular Data → [your SIM] → Preferred Network Type, and choose the 5G option.
Why Isn't 5G Showing on My Phone? (Troubleshooting)
If you've confirmed the basics and 5G still isn't appearing, here are the most common reasons, in order of likelihood.
You're Outside a 5G Coverage Area
This is the most common reason by far. Confirm your exact location is within your operator's published 5G zone.
Your Phone Doesn't Support Pakistan's 5G Bands
Some phones support 5G technology generally but not the specific frequency bands deployed locally. This makes the phone effectively incompatible here, even though it works fine elsewhere.
Your SIM or eSIM Doesn't Support 5G
Older SIM cards may physically lack the capability. A replacement SIM from your operator usually resolves this.
Your Phone's Software is Outdated
Older operating system versions can prevent 5G from being recognized. Update to the latest available software and try again.
5G is Turned Off in Network Settings
Double-check the steps above for your device. It's easy to overlook a setting buried a few menus deep.
Your Phone Defaults Back to 4G in Low-Signal Areas
Most phones use adaptive network switching, meaning they automatically switch between 4G and 5G, or drop to 4G when the 5G signal is weak or unstable, to keep your connection reliable.
This is normal behavior, not a fault, as your phone is prioritizing a stable connection over a flaky 5G one.
How Can You Tell If You're Actually Connected to 5G?
The 5G icon isn't always proof of an active connection. On some phones, particularly iPhones in "5G Auto" mode, the icon can appear even while your phone is using LTE in the background, since it reflects network availability rather than your current active connection.
For a more reliable check, look at your phone's network status or field-test menu. On Android, this is under Settings → About Phone → Status. On iPhone, dial *3001#12345#* and press call to open field test mode showing real-time connection data.
A speed test alone doesn't confirm 5G either because a fast result can come from strong 4G, and a slow one can happen on 5G in a congested area. Signal also fluctuates naturally as you move, so don't be alarmed if your connection type changes from moment to moment. That's expected, not a malfunction.
Frequently Asked Questions About 5G in Pakistan
1. Can I use 5G without changing my SIM?
Only if your existing SIM already supports 5G. Older SIM cards often need to be replaced before 5G will activate, even if your phone and plan both support it.
2. Why does my phone keep switching between 4G and 5G?
This is normal adaptive network behavior. Your phone automatically switches to whichever connection is more stable and efficient at that moment, especially in areas with patchy 5G coverage.
3. Why is 5G draining my battery faster after activation?
5G antennas use more power than 4G, particularly in "5G On" mode where your phone constantly searches for and maintains a 5G connection. Switching to "5G Auto" usually balances this out.
4. Will 5G work indoors?
It depends on your building and how close you are to a 5G tower. 5G signals generally don't penetrate walls as effectively as 4G, so indoor performance can be weaker than what you get outdoors.
5. Do I need to restart my phone after activating 5G?
It's a good habit. While not always required, restarting helps ensure the new network setting is fully applied.
6. Can I turn 5G off and go back to 4G?
Yes. On iPhone, select "LTE" under Voice & Data. On Android, simply choose a 4G-only option in your network mode settings. You can switch back to 5G at any time.
