If you are planning a trip abroad, sorting out your phone connection is probably on your to do list, right next to visas and packing. Nobody wants to land in a new country and spend the first hour hunting for a SIM shop just to tell their family they have arrived safely.

This guide covers everything a Pakistani traveller needs to know about using an eSIM abroad, from what it is to how to set one up before you leave home.

By the end, you will know which option suits your trip and how to avoid the mistakes that leave people without data on day one.

What is a Travel eSIM and How Does It Work?

There is nothing to collect or lose, and it works alongside your existing Pakistani SIM, so your phone runs two lines at once.

What Are Your Options as a Pakistani Traveller?

When it comes to staying connected overseas, most Pakistani travellers choose from three main options. Each one has its own trade offs depending on how long you are travelling and how much you want to spend.

Option 1: Use Your Pakistani Operator's Roaming Plan

The catch is that roaming rates are usually the most expensive way to get data, and packages can run out quickly with maps, social media, or video calls.

Option 2: Buy an International Travel eSIM

A travel eSIM gives you local or regional data rates without needing to change your number or hunt for a shop after landing. You install it before your trip, and it activates the moment you arrive.

This has become the most popular choice for travellers who want a balance of convenience and cost.

Option 3: Buy a Local Physical SIM on Arrival

You can also buy a SIM card once you land, usually at the airport or a local shop. This can be cheap in some countries, but it means standing in a queue after a long flight, showing ID, and sometimes struggling with the language if the staff don't speak English or Urdu.

Why Use an eSIM for International Travel?

Once you understand how the three options compare, it becomes clear why more travellers are shifting towards eSIMs. Here is what makes them worth considering.

No Need to Queue at the Airport for a SIM Card

You land, turn on data roaming for your eSIM, and you are connected. No searching for a kiosk, no waiting behind other tired travellers, no paperwork.

Keep Your Pakistani Number Active While Abroad

Since the eSIM works as a second line, your original Pakistani number stays active on the same phone. Family and friends can still reach you on WhatsApp or by call without you switching numbers.

Easier to Switch Between Countries on Long Trips

If your trip covers more than one country, some travel eSIMs support regional coverage, meaning you don't need to buy a new SIM every time you cross a border.

More Secure Than a Physical SIM That Can Be Lost or Stolen

A tiny SIM card is easy to misplace, especially when you are juggling bags and boarding passes. An eSIM is installed digitally, so there is nothing physical that can fall out of your phone or get left behind in a hotel room.

Can Pakistanis Use an eSIM When Travelling Abroad?

Yes, Pakistanis can use eSIMs for international travel, and the process is simpler than most people expect. The main thing to check is whether your phone supports the technology.

What Do You Need to Use an International Travel eSIM?

Can You Buy and Install a Travel eSIM Before Leaving Pakistan?

Yes, and this is actually the recommended approach. You can purchase and install the eSIM profile while you are still at home on Wi-Fi, so it is ready to activate the moment you land. This saves you from relying on unfamiliar airport Wi-Fi networks abroad.

How Does a Travel eSIM Work Throughout Your Trip?

The process is straightforward if you follow it in order. Here is what happens at each stage of your journey.

You choose your destination, select a suitable data plan, and install the eSIM profile while connected to Wi-Fi at home. It sits inactive until you reach your destination.

Once you land and turn on data roaming for the eSIM, it connects to a partner network in that country. You should have data within a few minutes, sometimes before you even leave the airport.

Can You Keep Your Pakistani Number and WhatsApp Active While Abroad?

This is one of the biggest concerns for travellers, and thankfully the answer works in your favour.

Will WhatsApp Work With Your Pakistani Number While Travelling?

Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your phone number, not to a specific SIM or network. As long as your phone has an internet connection, through the travel eSIM or hotel Wi-Fi, WhatsApp keeps working exactly as it does at home.

Can You Receive OTPs on Your Pakistani Number Abroad?

Yes, as long as your Pakistani SIM stays in your phone, even without a local balance, most networks will still deliver SMS based OTPs. This is helpful for banking apps and verification codes.

Yes, this is the whole point of an eSIM setup. Your physical Pakistani SIM stays in one slot for calls, texts, and OTPs, while the eSIM handles data. Both stay active on the same phone at once.

How to Set Up a Travel eSIM Before Leaving Pakistan

Setting up your eSIM properly before you fly makes the rest of your trip much smoother. Follow these steps in order.

Step 1: Check Your Phone Supports eSIM and Is Unlocked

Check your phone settings or ask your operator to confirm eSIM support and that your device is unlocked to use a second profile.

Pick a plan based on your destination and how much data you expect to use. If you are visiting more than one country, look for a regional plan that covers all of them.

Step 3: Purchase and Download the eSIM Profile

Buy the plan and install the QR code or profile while connected to Wi-Fi, a day or two before your flight so you have time to fix any issues.

In your phone settings, rename each SIM, for example "Pakistan Number" and "Travel Data", so you don't mix them up later.

Step 5: Set Your Travel eSIM as the Data Line

Go to your mobile data settings and choose the travel eSIM as your default data line, while keeping your Pakistani SIM for calls and texts.

Step 6: Confirm Your Settings After Landing

Can You Use Onic eSIM While Travelling Abroad?

Onic offers eSIM options that Pakistani travellers can use for international trips, giving you a way to get connected abroad without relying purely on roaming charges.

You can set it up the same way as any other travel eSIM, installing it before your flight so it is ready as soon as you land.

Common Travel eSIM Problems and How to Fix Them

Even with a smooth setup, a few small issues can pop up. Here is how to handle the most common ones.

Check that data roaming is switched on for the eSIM line, and try manually selecting a network if the connection doesn't come through right away.

Restart your phone and make sure the eSIM is set as the active data line, since phones sometimes default back to the primary line after a restart.

Check your mobile data settings to confirm which SIM is selected. This usually happens if you didn't set the travel eSIM as default during setup.

Tips for Pakistani Travellers Using an eSIM Abroad

Yes. Any Pakistani traveller with an eSIM compatible, unlocked phone can install and use a travel eSIM in most countries.

2. Can I buy a travel eSIM from Pakistan before my trip?

Yes, you can purchase and install it while still in Pakistan, as long as you have Wi-Fi to download the profile.

3. Will WhatsApp work with a travel eSIM?

Yes, WhatsApp runs on your phone number and works over any internet connection, so it functions normally once your eSIM data is active.

4. Can I receive OTPs on my Pakistani number while abroad?

Yes, as long as your Pakistani SIM remains in your phone, SMS based OTPs generally continue to arrive even without an active local balance.

5. Do travel eSIMs support calls and SMS or just data?

Most travel eSIMs are mainly for data. For calls and texts, you would typically use your Pakistani SIM or an app based service like WhatsApp.

6. Is a travel eSIM cheaper than international roaming?

In most cases, yes. Travel eSIMs are usually priced closer to local rates, while operator roaming packages charge a premium for the same amount of data.

7. Does my phone need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM abroad?

Yes, so it can accept and run an additional eSIM profile alongside your existing SIM.

The Future of Mobile Connectivity in Pakistan: 5G and eSIM

It happens to everyone…you forget your own number, or you want to see how much data you have left before stepping out.

With Onic, you won't find the usual short codes you're used to from other networks. Everything lives in the app, and once you know where to look, checking anything takes about five seconds.

This guide covers every way to check your Onic SIM number, balance, remaining data, minutes, and current package, all in one place.

Quick Reference: How to Check Everything on Onic?

Here's a snapshot of where to find everything, before we go into detail below…

Forgetting your own number is more common than you'd think, especially when you've just switched to Onic or are using a second SIM. Here are all the ways to find it.

If you have credit on your SIM, simply call a friend or family member. Your number will appear on their screen as the incoming call. Ask them to read it back to you, or save it from their call log.

Method 3: Check Your SIM Packaging or Welcome Message

You can also find your number in your phone's own settings:

Onic does not use a USSD balance check code. Your remaining balance is visible directly on the Onic app home screen as soon as you log in.

How to Check Your Remaining Data and MBs on Onic?

Open the Onic app. On the home screen, you'll see a data usage indicator, usually displayed as a ring or progress bar, showing how much data you've used and how much is left in your current plan.

How to Check Your Remaining Minutes & SMS on Onic?

Your remaining minutes and SMS are also visible on the Onic app home screen alongside your data.

Your active plan name is shown on the Onic app home screen. You'll see the plan name and the number of days remaining on your current package displayed as a card on the dashboard. No need to navigate further for a quick check.

Onic does not officially publish or support USSD codes for account management. Unlike traditional Pakistani networks where dialing a short code is the primary way to check balance or data, Onic was designed from day one as an app-first network. All account information is managed through the Onic app.

Since Onic operates on established network infrastructure, some generic network codes may partially work. However, these are not officially supported by Onic, and the information returned may be inaccurate. The app remains the only reliable source.

Why Doesn't Onic Use Traditional USSD Codes?

Onic was built specifically to move away from the USSD-dependent model that traditional Pakistani networks rely on.

USSD codes are a legacy system, they require you to memorise different codes for different things, the responses are text-only and difficult to read, and they offer no way to take action on what you see.

Onic's alternative is a real-time dashboard in the app where everything is visible at a glance, interactive, and actionable. You can check your data, switch your plan, contact support, and make a payment, all in the same place, without memorising a single code.

What If You Can't See Your Number or Usage?

If your Onic app isn't showing your number or usage details, try the following:

1. Is there an Onic SIM number check code?

Onic does not officially support a USSD code for checking your number. The most reliable way is to open the Onic app, your number is displayed at the top of the home screen. You can also check via phone settings or by calling someone.

2. Can I check my Onic SIM number without the app?

5. How do I know which Onic package I'm using?

Your active plan name and remaining days are shown as a card on the Onic app home screen. Tap the card to see full plan details including your data, minutes, SMS allowance, and expiry.

Check your Onic SIM number, balance, remaining data, and active package, all from the Onic app. No USSD codes needed. Every method is covered in one guide.

How To Check Your Onic SIM Number, Balance & Data

Is there an Onic SIM number check code?

Yes. You can call someone and your number will appear on their screen, check your phone's SIM settings (Settings → About Phone → SIM Status on Android, or Settings → Phone → My Number on iPhone), or look at your original SIM packaging or welcome SMS.

Can I check my Onic SIM number without the app?

Open the Onic app. Your remaining data is shown on the home screen dashboard. For a detailed breakdown, go to Dashboard → Usage Logs → Data → select a time period → Get Logs, and the report will be sent to your email.

Every so often a telecom brand comes along that doesn’t just add another SIM option to the market, but tries to rethink how people should interact with a mobile network altogether.

Onic is that brand in Pakistan. Launched as a fully digital telco built for people who live online, Onic has positioned itself as Pakistan’s first Azaad Digital Network, a telecom experience designed around freedom, transparency, and control rather than paperwork and counters.

Here’s a complete look at what Onic actually is, what makes it different, and everything it offers.

Onic is a digital telecom brand launched on 14th August 2023, and the date is no coincidence. Choosing Pakistan’s Independence Day as its launch date reflects the idea at the center of the brand: freedom, or “Azaadi”.

Onic was built for what it calls digital natives, people who already manage most of their lives through an app, and who expect the same simplicity, speed, and transparency from their mobile network.

Why Onic Calls Itself Pakistan’s First Azaad Digital Network?

The word "Azaad" means free, and Onic uses it deliberately to describe what it's offering: freedom from the friction that has traditionally defined telecom in Pakistan.

That means freedom from confusing bundles, hidden charges buried in fine print, and having to physically visit a service center just to make a simple change to your plan.

Onic frames this as a broader shift, giving its customers the flexibility to manage their connectivity entirely on their own terms, whether that means streaming, working remotely, gaming, or simply staying connected.

That positioning is what earns Onic its title as Pakistan's first Azaad Digital Network.

Onic works entirely through the Onic app. You order your SIM or eSIM in-app, collect your SIM at a pickup point or activate your eSIM, then manage everything in one place.

What Makes Onic Different from Traditional Mobile Networks?

A few core principles run through everything Onic does, and they’re what separate it from a traditional mobile network:

These aren’t just marketing lines; they reflect a genuinely different approach to running a telecom brand, one built around the assumption that customers want to be in control rather than dependent on a call center or a service counter.

Where many networks add digital tools as a convenience layered on top of an otherwise traditional process, Onic inverted that relationship, treating the app itself as the primary product and everything else as infrastructure supporting it.

Onic 5G is currently live at select locations in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, with more cities being added in phases. You can check Onic coverage in your specific area.

Onic's plans are built around different usage patterns and time frames, giving customers flexibility over how they pay for connectivity:

Can You Switch Your Existing Number to Onic?

Onic supports Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which means you can bring your existing number from any Pakistani network to Onic without changing your contact details.

The porting process is handled entirely through the Onic app, only store visit required for biometric verification.

Once your request is submitted and processed, your number moves to Onic while staying exactly the same.

No delivery wait, no plastic card. Onic eSIM works on iPhones from the XS onwards and most modern Android flagships that support eSIM.

Onic 5G is live at select locations in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, with more sites being added as network infrastructure expands. No plan change or SIM upgrade is needed.

Beyond connectivity, Onic comes with a range of features built directly into the app and included with your plan. Here's a quick overview of what's available:

It supports complete service journeys, from plan queries to troubleshooting, and connects to a human agent when needed.

With data rollover, unused data from your billing cycle carries forward into the next cycle automatically. You don't lose what you've already paid for, it simply rolls over and adds to your next month's allowance.

The app is the service, not a supplement to it. For most account tasks, you're a few taps away from done.

Onic operates as a digital brand of Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), which is also the parent company of Ufone. As part of the e& (formerly Etisalat) group, Onic is backed by one of the region's most established telecom conglomerates, with Circles providing the underlying digital platform.

Onic’s messaging is consistently aimed at what it calls digital natives, but in practice that covers a wide range of everyday users:

Onic offers weekly, monthly, annual, group, roaming, and location based plans.

A feature bundled into Onic plans that gives customers premium access to GPT 5.1 and Gemini directly through the Onic ecosystem.

Yes. Unused data from your billing cycle carries over into the next cycle instead of expiring, so you don’t lose what you’ve already paid for.

Onic 5G is rolling out gradually in phases as network infrastructure expands, rather than launching everywhere at once.

Onic operates as a digital brand of Pak Telecom Mobile Limited, part of the e& group.

Onic is prepaid. All plans are paid for upfront with no monthly billing cycle or postpaid commitment.

Onic is the better choice if you want a fully digital experience with transparent pricing, data rollover, app-based management, and no hidden charges. It is the only Pakistani network built entirely around that experience from the ground up.

Yes. Onic supports Mobile Number Portability. You can switch to Onic and keep your existing number from any Pakistani network, handled entirely through the app.

FUP stands for Fair Usage Policy. On Onic plans, FUP applies to unlimited calling, after a certain threshold of minutes is consumed within the billing cycle, call rates may be adjusted. The specific FUP limits are stated clearly within each plan's details in the Onic app.
